Where reusable steel forms fit
Steel forms are a practical choice for crews that repeat common heights and want a durable, consistent forming edge. Standardized pieces make inventory, setup, and repeat orders easier to plan. The tradeoffs include higher initial purchase cost, product weight, and the need to maintain and transport the system.
Where job-built wood forms fit
Wood can be readily cut for one-off shapes, short runs, and unusual field conditions. Materials may be locally available and familiar to the crew. The tradeoffs can include more cutting and fabrication time, variation between pieces, and a shorter useful life depending on material and handling.

Straight steel and flexible steel are separate tools
A straight steel form is built for straight runs. Curved work uses flexible sections and still requires planning for the form height and practical radius. Do not force a straight form into work it was not designed to perform.
Calculate ownership around the crew's real work
Compare more than purchase price. Consider cutting and setup time, number of expected uses, repair and replacement, cleaning, transport, storage, and how often the same heights repeat. The lowest-cost answer can differ between a one-time layout and a contractor pouring similar flatwork every week.
Steel versus lumber ownership worksheet
Compare the same formed edges, heights and completed setups over one period you choose. Enter your own costs for both systems; use 0 when a cost does not apply. Nothing is prefilled with an assumed lifespan, labor saving or resale value.
Choose a period such as your next year of awarded work. Worker-hours are the sum across the crew. Use a blended loaded rate if wages differ. All amounts are US dollars; use the same treatment of purchase taxes for both systems.

Net period cost = initial materials + initial freight + other period costs − value remaining + setups × (worker-hours × loaded hourly rate + replacement materials per setup + other costs per setup).
Cost per setup = net period cost ÷ completed setups. Each setup uses the same size material set. The model does not calculate form lifespan, financing, inflation or tax treatment. Include a cost once, either for the whole period or per setup.
Run low, expected and high use cases by changing the setup count. Revisit storage, replacements and residual value when the period or use changes. Collect one comparable set of crew records
Start with the same form height, formed edges and number of simultaneous setups for both options. Get a current steel quote for the complete list and a local lumber price for the same work. Count lumber reuse when it is supported by your records, and include steel replacement costs when pieces are lost or damaged.
Time preparation, setting, stripping, cleaning and moving separately. Three workers working for two hours is six worker-hours. Compare several ordinary jobs before treating a time difference as a repeatable result.
Use the existing quantity planner to start the piece list. Freight and volume discounts change the purchase total, so use the current order price in your worksheet.
When to compare a rental quote
For a short inventory peak, get a separate written quote from a supplier that confirms the exact system, height, quantity and availability. Include the minimum rental period, delivery and return, cleaning, damage terms and extension charges. This guide does not assume OMF or a nearby rental yard has rental inventory.
Compare that total against the same work and crew costs. Buying, renting and using lumber can each fit different parts of the schedule; a useful decision follows the work you expect to complete and the cash and storage it requires.
