Concrete form pins and stakes

The pin has to fit the form and hold in the ground.

Diameter is only one part of the choice. Check the pocket, usable length, form height, base material, and the work that will push on the form.

Use a straight steel pin that fits the form pocket without forcing or sloppy side play. Pick the length from the form height and the ground that must hold it. Then follow the form maker's pocket and support instructions for that exact system. There is no safe one-size-fits-all pin spacing.

1. Start with the pocket, not the pin bucket

Clean one pocket and one known-good pin. Measure the pin across the straight shank, away from burrs and mushrooming. Measure the pocket opening where the pin actually bears. Slide the pin through by hand before taking a hammer to it.

The pin should enter and lock the way the form system was built to work. If it must be beaten through, the parts may not match or one may be damaged. If it rattles badly, the form can move before the pin starts doing useful work.

2. Separate total length from length in the ground

A pin can be long overall and still have too little steel below the form pocket. Mark where the pocket holds the pin. The part below that mark is the usable ground length.

Manufacturer guidance commonly ties stake length to form height and subbase. Treat that as a starting conversation, not permission to ignore loose fill, wet soil, frost, underground utilities, or a tall exposed form face.

3. Test the ground where the form will stand

  • Dense aggregate: The pin may drive hard and hold well, but buried stone can kick it sideways. Watch the form instead of assuming hard driving means a good set.
  • Loose fill or soft soil: A pin can drive easily and still give poor side resistance. Stop if the line moves under a firm hand check.
  • Wet or disturbed trench edge: The top can look sound while the pin is working in weak material below. Review bearing, drainage, and support.
  • Frozen or unknown ground: Do not guess about hold or buried services. Use the site's safe digging and utility-locate process.

4. Count by pockets, then add the job-specific checks

Count the usable pockets on every straight form, flexible form, corner, filler lock, and transition piece in the actual setup. Do not assume every ten-foot section has the same pocket layout. Keep a separate count for spares and replacements.

Pocket count is not the whole support plan. Ends, connections, curves, high forms, poor bearing, placing pressure, and equipment riding the forms may need a reviewed setup. OSHA's controlling rule is performance based: the formwork must handle the loads reasonably expected without failure.

Questions contractors ask

Are 3/4-inch and 7/8-inch concrete form pins interchangeable?

Not automatically. Some systems are designed for both sizes; others are not. Measure the actual pocket, read the maker's instructions, and trial-fit the complete connection.

How long should a concrete form pin be?

Long enough to fit the system and develop useful hold in the actual ground after accounting for the form and pocket height. Form height and ground conditions both matter, so total pin length alone is not an answer.

How far apart should concrete form stakes be?

Use the pockets and support method specified for the exact form system and job. Do not copy one universal spacing across different form heights, soils, curves, loads, and hardware.
